According to a plan promoted by the Municipality of San Jose and the Chinese-Costa Rican Chamber of Industry and Commerce, part of the southern area of the capital city of Costa Rica will be dedicated to Chinese business, food, and culture; in other words, a Chinatown in all senses. Ever since June 1st last year, when Costa Rica renewed its diplomatic relations with Beijing and severed the ones with Taiwan, there has been an evident interest of the Chinese to have an enhanced presence in this Central American nation. Just as an example, the National Stadium was demolished and the Chinese will build a modern facility, the best in Costa Rica, to house soccer –the nation’s favorite sport– and other events. Therefore, the Chinatown project is expected to develop fast.

In an effort to circumvent downtown traffic, seven new peripheral bus routes directly linking several of San José’s suburbs and nearby towns will begin operating tomorrow. The new routes are intended to lessen congestion in downtown San José and reduce the time it takes commuters to travel between these destinations, according to the Public Works and Transport Ministry (MOPT).
The seven new routes are: the southern suburb of Desamparados to the northeastern suburb of Moravia; the southern suburb of Hatillo to the northeastern suburb of Guadalupe; the northwestern district of La Uruca to the western suburb of Escazú; Guadalupe to La Uruca; Moravia to La Valencia (the road through La Uruca connecting San José to the city of Heredia, north of San José); Moravia to La Valencia; La Valencia to Santa Ana, southwest of San José; and Escazú to Alajuelita, south of San José.
The routes will operate Monday through Friday from 5:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Buses will run every seven to 10 minutes during rush hour (6:30 to 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.) and every 20 minutes during non-peak times. Fares will range from ¢270 ($0.52) to ¢475 ($0.91).
The new routes were selected based on the results of a survey of 14,500 homes and a series of studies contracted by MOPT.
