About 2 Tons Of Cocaine Floating At Sea in Puntarenas

Friday, July 11th, 2008

Authorities fear that the cocaine thrown in the waters of Puntarenas by drug runners could result in a wave of crimes and murders for the drug.

The Puntarenas detachment of the Organismo de Investigación Judicial (OIJ) is calling on residents not to recover any of the drugs found floating or to store the drugs found on the beach.

The drugs are part of some 2 tons of cocaine that suspected Colombian drug runners threw in the water near the Isla Negritas, in Puntarenas, before the Costa Rican coast guard intercepted their boat, confiscating some 2.5 million tons of the white powder.

Authorities say that just holding or trying to sell the found drugs could mean death, fearing that the drug runners won’t think twice about shooting first and asking questions later when it comes to recovering their lost merchandise.

The OIJ is asking residents of Puntarenas to call authorities if they find or see a packet of drugs floating in the water. So far the OIJ says it has recovered 60kgs in barrio El Cocal.

“We are giving the recollection of drugs a priority”, said the ministra de Seguridad Pública, Janina Del Vecchio.

Confusion And Doubt Reigned On First Day Of Expanded Vehicular Restrictions

Friday, July 11th, 2008

Confusion and doubt, both from drivers and Tránsito (traffic) officials, was evident yesterday in the first day of the expanded hours of the vehicular restrictions of San José.

Many drivers say they were surprised when stopped by a Tránsito, saying not to be aware of the all day restrictions. Meanwhile, Tránsitos were unclear on the number of tickets that could be issued to an offending driver on the same day, due to lack of good communications by superiors.

One thing was evident, there were fewer vehicles on the road.

Travelling on the Circunvalación at noon time felt like it was a Sunday. Getting of the ramp from Escazú to the Circunvalación was without the usual backlog of traffic. The same was reported in all areas around San José.

Although the expanded restriction has been a popular subject all week since the government announced that it would restrict traffic in San José on a 24 hour basis beginning on Thursday, then at the last minute reducing it to 13 hours, more than 700 drivers were found in violation and fined.

The 6am to 7pm restriction applies to all passenger vehicles and while all commercial vehicles are restricted from circulating in the morning and afternoon rush hours. (more…)

Could Climate Change Impact Costa Rica? New Study Says Yes

Friday, July 11th, 2008

While melting Arctic sea ice and glaciers have become a symbol of climate change, new research from the University of Massachusetts Amherst indicates that highland forests in Costa Rica could also be seriously affected by future changes in climate, reducing the number of species in a region famous for its biodiversity.

“Central America is a major, emerging “hot spot” in the tropics where climate change impacts on the environment will be pronounced, and the loss of species associated with climate has already been identified,” says doctoral candidate Ambarish Karmalkar of the UMass Amherst Climate System Research Center. He recently attended the first conference organized in Costa Rica to study this issue. “We have completed a regional climate model showing that many areas of Costa Rica will become warmer and drier as climate change accelerates, and these changes will be amplified at higher elevations.”

Additional members of the research team include Raymond Bradley, a professor of geosciences at UMass Amherst, and Henry Diaz of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. (more…)
