The Financial Sector in Costa Rica

The Banco de San Jose, along with the Costa Rican branch of Credomatic, have joined forces to promote a Carbon Neutral Campaign nationwide.

The campaign invites Costa Rican as well as residents to join forces and contribute in mitigating gas emissions produced by their vehicles. The Banco de San Jose and Credomatic have contacted the Scientific Tropical Center in order to obtain accurate information regarding gas emissions from all circulating vehicles in Costa Rica.

The research revealed that each car produces approximately 5.5 tons of carbon dioxide per year. By planting 11 trees per year, vehicle owners will compensate the CO2 production of their cars. The program will require that whoever volunteers to participate, will donate $5 per month for as long as the person wishes to remain in the program.

The Scientific Tropical Center has identified the biological corridors where the trees will be planted not only for its contribution to the environment, but to the local wildlife as well. The areas that have been chosen as the ideal spots to plant the trees are the Monteverde – Nicoya Gulf corridor on the pacific coast, the San Juan – La Selva corridor in northern Costa Rica and the Alexander Skutch – Amisconde in the southern region.

By planting the trees in these specific biological corridors instead of in private properties will guarantee their conservation and environmental benefit. The corridors unite isolated forest regions which allow for the trees to not only capture the CO2 and release O2, but also provide an appropriate habitat to the local wildlife.

The campaign counts with over 5,000 committed collaborators which have taken on the task of educating the people about the importance of preserving the environment and taking action as responsible citizens of Costa Rica and the World.
