When crocodiles Attack

Wednesday, October 8th, 2008

crocodile1.jpgJust as I was about to dive with my grand daughter in June of 2007, I stopped her and we looked in awe at the giant prints of a very large lizard in the sand.

There was no doubt that the marks had belonged to a huge crocodile and that it had come from the sea. No need to say that swimming after that did not seem like such a good idea! Soon, in fact, we realized that guards were walking along the beach warning people and advising them not to go into the ocean!

Sept. 19 of this year, 13-year-old Dakota Kilbride was having fun surfing in Playa Hermosa, just south of Jaco. Dakota was suddenly attacked by a huge crocodile, and only the will to survive and fighting spirit saved his life as he struggled to stay on his board while the crocodile was trying to pull him into the water and to drown him. Dakota suffered severe bites on this ankle and leg and is now trying to recover from the terrifying ordeal. (more…)

Costa Rican Builders Forced to Raise Home Prices Due to Increasing Steel Prices

Costa Rican consumers are paying higher prices for nearly all of their necessities today. Noticeable differences in the cost of weekly grocery bills, trips to the gas station, and purchases of everyday items are common among Costa Rican citizens, and now it is anticipated that housing prices will be increasing as well. Additional increases are expected by the end of December 2008. Steel, along with aluminum and glass, require an enormous amount of energy to produce, and with the recent escalating fuel prices, the cost of these products, especially steel, has skyrocketed. Depending on the size of the home, the cost of steel for construction can be up to twice as much compared to the cost in recent years. (more…)

A stationary pressure area in the Pacific is the latest weather concern, particularly for the western part of Costa Rica.

The national emergency commission has racheted up the alert even though the system is some distance to the north and west.

The U.S. Hurricane Center in Miami reports that the low pressure area is a couple of hundred miles south of Acapulco, México, and has the potential to become a tropical depression over the next couple of days.

An increase in strength would certainly be felt in Costa Rica, which is several hundred miles to the south and east. (more…)
