A Tica Could Be The Next “Latin American Idol” Tonight

maria-jose-castillo2.jpgCosta Rica’s very own Latin American Idol finalist, María José Castillo, performed three songs Wednesday night, and the winner of Latin American Idol will be announced in a half-hour show tonight.

The Costa Rican government has declared Ms. Castillo a person of cultural interest, and she will be met with a huge crowd Friday at Juan Santamaría airport regardless of the outcome.

María José has become a real Costa Rican Idol already, with her electrifying performances on the television program produced by Sony Entertainment and broadcast live from Argentina.

“Thank you very much, I am very grateful to the people who believed in me,” said María José between smiles and tears.

The final will be broadcast on October 9 at 7pm (local time) on the Sony channel.

Costa Rica National Football Stadium Delayed

The halting of the construction of the new national stadium has given rise to anger by many Costa Ricans following the news yesterday of a Constitutional Court decision to halt construction of the new stadium in the Parque La Sabana, that was supposed have begun next month.

The Court decision followed a “recurso de amparo” by the former ministro de Cultura, Guido Sáenz, and a group of eight other individuals, who are asking for an environmental impact study before the mega structure is allowed to be erected where the old stadium, demolished last month, stood.

The stadium, with a capacity of 40.000, double that of the old stadium, and at a cost of us$72 million dollars donated by the government of China, is to stand in the place of the old stadium that was in use for the last 84 years. (more…)

Chinese president to visit Costa Rica in November

chinese-president-hu-jintao.jpegChinese President Hu Jintao is set to visit Costa Rica next month, 17 months after the Central American nation broke 63 years of ties with Taiwan to establish a diplomatic link with Beijing, Costa Rican authorities said Wednesday.

During his November 17 visit, Hu is set to meet with Costa Rican President Oscar Arias, to discuss bilateral ties in the fields of politics, trade and cooperation.

Costa Rican Congress Speaker Francisco Antonio Pacheco told the media that Hu also plans to attend an event in the legislature.

Big companies on prowl for bilingual workers in Costa Rica

About 15 high-powered companies say they’re looking to hire 2,000 English-speaking employees at a bilingual job fair that begins today and ends Saturday in San José.

The Costa Rican-North American Cultural Center is organizing the fair for the third year in a row and expects 3,000 job seekers to flood the three-day event, up about 1,000 from last year’s turnout. (more…)

Hilton to increase its Central/Latin American portfolio

hilton-hotel.jpeg Hilton Hotels Corporation has announced expansion plans to quadruple its presence in the Caribbean and Latin America by adding 150 new hotels to the portfolio over the next five years.

The company also revealed a new development structure, made up of six dedicated staff, to lead the efforts in achieving this objective.

This news underscores the company’s stated goal to add 1,000 hotels to its international portfolio in ten years.

Steve Goldman, president, global development & real estate, for Hilton Hotels Corporation, explained: “Expanding our global platform is a strategic priority for Hilton.
