Nicaraguan president saddened by citizens killed in Costa Rica’s earthquake

Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortegaon Sunday expressed his condolences to the families of the four Nicaraguans killed by Costa Rica’s recent earthquake, and ordered Nicaragua’s embassy in Costa Rica to offer all necessary help to the Costa Rican government and people.

According to the Nicaraguan Foreign Ministry, some Nicaraguan diplomats have arrived in Costa Rica to help arrange the burial ofthe two Nicaraguan girls who died in the earthquake.

The Nicaraguan embassy in San Jose, capital of Costa Rica, has been distributing food and water to the affected people.

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake hit the mountain villages some 35 km northwest of the capital of San Jose on Thursday afternoon, killing at least 18 and causing dozens of others missing.

Death Toll From Costa Rica Earthquake Climbs to 14

The death toll from the magnitude-6.2 earthquake that rocked Costa Rica has risen to 14, the Red Cross said early Friday after 10 more bodies were found.

Rescue teams and security forces, meanwhile, were still trying to reach the zone most affected by Thursday’s quake, since some communities remained cut off due to landslides. (more…)

Calle 13 scheduled to play 2009 Palmares Festival

Palmares Festival completed the schedule of international artists that will be performing during the festival which begins next Wednesday Jan. 14th. The festival is a 12 day event which is actually a combination of parties thrown by different associations. The Palmares Festival is the largest festival in Costa Rica and draws hundreds of thousands of people from Costa Rica but also international tourists. (more…)

2 Canadians missing after Costa Rica earthquake

Two Canadians are missing after a strong earthquake rocked Costa Rica on Thursday afternoon, according to the Costa Rican Red Cross.

The two Canadians were staying at a hotel in the Vara Blanca mountain area, said Red Cross spokesman Freddy Roman. He said search crews in the area passed on the information. The Canadians are among 22 people missing since the quake struck Thursday.

At least 12 people have been reported dead.

A spokesman for Foreign Affairs said Thursday that no Canadians had been reported killed in the earthquake. Alain Cacchione said that Canadians with family and friends in Costa Rica’s largest city should contact Canadian officials.

“The Canadian consulate is monitoring the situation,” said Cacchione.

The department was unavailable later for comment on the Red Cross report of missing persons.

The 6.1-magnitude quake occurred 35 kilometres northwest of San Jose, according to the U.S. Geological Survey Earthquake Hazards Program.
