Limón And Sarapiquí On Yellow Alert

Typical of the season, the Comisión Nacional de Emergencias (CNE) has declared a “yellow” alert for the Caribbean areas of Limón and Sarapiquí, Heredia, following days of heavy rain and strong winds.

While the rest of the country is enjoying the “summer” or “dry” season, the Caribbean coast and northern zone are in full swing of the rainy season. (more…)

Government gets tough on unlicensed taxis

In a victory for Costa Rica’s taxi drivers, President Oscar Arias’ administration agreed yesterday to crack down on unlicensed taxis and forbid car services from escorting passengers.

The decision came late Wednesday following a meeting at the government’s Casa Presidencial in southeastern San José, where taxi drivers had been striking outside since 8 a.m. in protest of unauthorized taxis, known as piratas, and lawful car-service businesses, or porteadores.

The agreement, signed by Presidency Minister Rodrigo Arias, Transport Minister Karla González and leaders from both the car service and traditional red taxi sectors, will prohibit newly registered porteadores from transporting people. The law will allow existing porteadores to continue operating. (more…)

Nicaragua announces suspension of tourist visas

Nicaragua’s tourism sector is celebrating the recent announcement that the government of President Daniel Ortega is going to lift all visa requirements for foreign travelers as an incentive to boost tourism here.

The announcement was made several days ago by Tourism Minister Mario Salinas during the FITUR international tourism trade fair in Spain. President Ortega is expected to sign the measure this week, according to sources at the Nicaraguan Tourism Institute (INTUR). (more…)
