Soccer: U.S. side prepares for return to Costa Rica

A steady drizzle and patches of fog initially slowed the U.S. men’s soccer team. A lackluster offense and a disorganized defense made matters worse as Costa Rica’s fans chanted and danced in the stands.

The Americans were soaked and smoked the last time they played at Costa Rica in FIFA World Cup qualifying — a 3-0 loss in 2005 in San Jose exposing vulnerabilities that resurfaced in a quick exit from the 2006 tournament.

They’re confident a scoring spree and hot goalkeeping will prevent a repeat performance Wednesday at Costa Rica, riding momentum from a productive start to the final round of qualifying for the 2010 World Cup.

Jozy Altidore recorded a hat track when the U.S. last took the field in April, posting a 3-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago. Michael Bradley carried the No. 15-ranked Americans with a pair of goals in a 2-0 victory over Mexico, and the U.S. managed a 2-2 tie against El Salvador despite a hiccup by Brad Guzan, who replaced Tim Howard in goal. TV Review: ‘I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here!’

Costa Rica. She bravely took his place on “I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here!” so their family would have some income – and for a children’s cancer charity.

On last night’s premiere episode, Patti distinguished herself as one of the more sane contestants on the gross-out reality show. And no, there was no swearing. Not even as she chewed a tarantula. (It had a “musty, yeasty” flavor, she said.)

Patti did, however, pick up a few celebrity endorsements for her husband. Spencer Pratt, a fabricated villain for “The Hills,” said that he would have voted for Rod for President. “I look at them as the Heidi and Spencer of politics,” Spencer confided to the camera. Presumably, he meant it as a compliment.

Patti even got a few minutes to argue Rod’s case in primetime. “He was always about doing the right thing for the people,” she explained. “He was fighting the special interests.” And the, um, trial? “They made a big hoopla out of something that wasn’t even true,” she said.

Decaying supermodel Janice Dickinson called her a “great woman.”

Then “new Christian” Spencer invited Patti to sit with him and his wife Heidi for a prayer. Soon Patti’s eyes filled with tears. It was unclear whether she was touched, or horrified by the company she was keeping. (more…)
