World Court Votes On Costa Rica – Nicaragua San Juan Dispute

The International Court of Justice ruled in favour of Costa Rica’s demand that Nicaragua lift restrictions on its tourist and commercial boats on the San Juan river, that borders both countries.

Although the river belongs to Nicaragua, a fact that Costa Rica has never disputed, under a 150 year old treaty Costa Rica has the right to patrol the 205 kilometre river that runs across both countries.

Nicaragua argued that its sovereignty over the river gives it the right to regulate traffic as it sees fit.

Costa Rica said, however, the same 1858 treaty accorded its vessels freedom of navigation for commercial purposes, and Nicaragua reneged on its obligations by requiring visas and forcing Costa Rican boats to stop for inspection at Nicaraguan military outposts on the northern bank. (more…)

Costa Rica calls for second round of Honduras dialogue

Costa Rica’s President Oscar Arias has called for a second round of talks within a week between Manuel Zelaya, Honduras’ president ousted in a June 28 military coup, and Roberto Micheletti, the nation’s post-coup leader, according to Sunday’s edition of the La Nacion newspaper.

Arias hosted the two leaders on Thursday at separate meetings, after which each side designated a committee of four to speak for them. Micheletti and Zelaya did not meet face-to-face, and Micheletti went directly from Arias’ residence to the airport.

Zelaya’s team had suggested that the next round of talks should be in Honduras’ capital Tegucigalpa, but later accepted Costa Ricaas the venue due to a tough environment in Honduras. (more…)

Costa Rica reports fifth A/H1N1 flu death

Costa Rica confirmed the country’s fifth death case caused by the A/H1N1 flu on Sunday.

The dead, a 25-year-old woman, was 22-week pregnant with a pair of twins, Costa Rican Deputy Health Minister Ana Morice told local media.

She miscarried a few hours before she died Saturday at a hospital in the capital, Morice said.

Costa Rica has confirmed 351 cases of flu infections so far, and the government was worried about the rising trend of spreading, said Morice, noting that the authorities would strengthen preventive measures consequently.

Costa Rica reported its first A/H1N1 flu death on May 9.
