The railway network in Costa Rica is relatively large and is continuous from coast to coast. In the early nineties transportation of passengers and goods from coast to coast and to the high lands was suspended. Most part of the rail network became useless in the mean time. Only in the banana growing areas of Limon goods are still transported by rail.
In 2005 the passenger service between Pavas (Metropolis III) and the Universidad Latina in San Jose via Zapote resumed. Currently this is the only regularly passengers train in Costa Rica.
Since August 2009, the line Heredia – San José is operating again.
There are some occasional, excursion trains between San Jose and Puntarenas.

Work crews of the Compañía Nacional de Fuerza y Luz (CNFL) have been issued orders to remove all of the 1.700 light posts in the downtown San José area as part of an aggressive campaign by the power utility as it continues to bury all services cables underground.
For the most part all the electrical and telephone cabling has already gone underground following years of installing an underground cable network.
However, a large part of the old cables are still hanging from the posts and they include cables by the television cable companies.
Fructuoso Garrido, manager of distribution for the CNFL, explained that work crews were busy this weekend cutting down cables still hanging on the posts in Barrio Amón as part of the plan to clean up the neighbourhood.
According to Garrido, the CNFL had issued an order to all cable companies to remove all its cabling and that the posts will come down.
A number of Amnet customers complained to the cable company when they were without service after CNFL crews followed their orders of cutting down all current cabling on the posts.
Garrido said that the war between the cable companies and the CNFL was something sure to happen, as the cable companies have not complied with the order, charging that the CNFL, which is part of the Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE), is forcing them out of the market with excessive costs to run their cables and now cutting them off all together.
With the opening of the telecommunications market, cable companies, for instance, can now also offer internet and other telephone services over their cables, which according to the cable companies, is not welcomed competition for ICE.
The Superintendencia de Telecomunicaciones (Sutel) – the recently created telcommunications regulator – is expected to get involved as it is requested to analyze each and every of the complaints filed by the cable companies against the CNFL and ICE.

Honduras’ interim government backed off its refusal of a visit by foreign delegates aimed at resolving the country’s political crisis.
The negotiators are welcome as long as Jose Miguel Insulza, head of the Organization of American States, participates only as an “observer,” the Foreign Relations Ministry said in a statement Sunday.
The government of interim President Roberto Micheletti has objected to what it calls a “lack of objectivity” by Insulza – a vocal advocate of restoring President Manuel Zelaya to office after he was ousted in a June 28 coup.
The ministry said the visit – originally planned for Tuesday – will now be rescheduled for a date “that will be decided in the next two days.”
The statement by the Foreign Relations Ministry came just hours after the government had postponed the visit, objecting to the inclusion of Insulza in the group.
The delegation organized by the OAS also includes the foreign ministers of Argentina, Canada, Costa Rica, Jamaica, Mexico and the Dominican Republic.
It was not the first time that diplomatic efforts to resolve the coup appear to have been delayed or drawn out by the interim government. It has dallied over a proposed compromise plan presented by Costa Rican President Oscar Arias, who served as mediator in the dispute, while rejecting the main point, Zelaya’s reinstatement in office. It was a fitting end to an event steeped in a mix of camaraderie and tough competition as Team USA took the overall gold medal yesterday over Team France at the Billabong ISA World Surfing Games presented by Monster Energy in Costa Rica. It was the first time that the Americans have won an overall gold medal in since the 1996 World Surfing Games in Huntington Beach, California.
From the opening heats of the Games at Playa Hermosa that began eight days ago, Team USA appeared committed and focused, as they competed against 34 other teams for a spot on the podium. With the final day of competition looming overhead, Team USA stood firm and was able to place five or their eight team members into the three finals, hence becoming the team to beat.
The team was led by Ian Cairns who assumed the position as Coach less than one month ago. “We had good surfers and what we did was to stay very concentrated,” said a low-key Cairns. “This is a long event and it was very important to preserve your energy.”
“I am really very happy” said Cairns of the first American title in more than a decade. “My goal was to come here and win. But also I wanted to establish a different personality for American surfing. I didn’t want to make a lot of noise until things were happening. We built the support, the calmness and we focused on being together and concentrating on doing things well. Later, at the final, we went to the beach to wave the flag.”
ISA President, Fernando Aguerre, said about the amazing Billabong ISA World Surfing Games: “This was a great event. The new team format (4 open men, 2 open women and 2 longboarders) proved to be the right decision. The inaugural Billabong ISA World Surfing Games will go down as a historical moment for surfing, with record number of competitors and national teams in attendance. Congratulations to all the nations and see you next year!” (more…)
