The Heredia – San José commuter train has reduced traffic congestion between the cuidad de las flores and the downtown San José by 25%, according to the latest calculations by transportation officials.
According to the Instituto Costarricense de Ferrocarriles (Incofer), on average 3.000 people daily take the train to and from Heredia and San José, reducing the number of vehicles on the road.
The reduction translates into a savings of 15 to 20 minutes of travel time during peak hours by those who continue to drive from Heredia to San José.
Miguel Carabaguiaz, president of the Incofer, added that some 5.000 people daily are expected to use the train, further reducing traffic congestion.
Transportation officials calculate 65.000 vehicles daily travel between Heredia and San José.

Saturday the Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE) will unify the two GSM cellular networks into one and is asking all customers of the GSM service to turn off their phones on Saturday night and then turn them back on Sunday.
The change will affect some 1.8 million cellular telephone users in Costa Rica, as ICE completely disconnects the Alcatel network, transferring all the lines from that network to the Ericsson network.
The changeover should go smoothly according to ICE technicians and customers should not be inconvenienced, as most cellular phones will automatically switch over to the new network.
However, in the case of phones who do not make the switch automatically, ICE will be publishing a series of technical steps for users to take to implement the change.
The change will cost ICE us$17.8 million dollars.
The change will not affect the 300.000 customers on the TDMA network.
