14 Nicaraguans Brave The San Juan To Cross Into Costa Rica

Monday, October 12th, 2009

A joint operation by police and immigration authorities disbanded a “coyote” network in the Northern Zone that were responsible for the illegal entry of 14 Nicaraguans, five of which were children and an elderly woman of 72 years of age.

Costa Rican authorities say the group had been travelling for the last four days, two of which were without food, as they made their way through the river San Juan with a a final destination of Boca San Carlos and Pital.

The immigrants told authorities that they had spent at least 10 hours in the river following their leader and his attempts to avoid police control posts in the area, to reach Pital where a small bus was waiting for them.

All fourteen immigrants and at least one of the “coyotes” were being held at the fiscalía de Ciudad Quesada (San Carlos) awaiting a hearing and extradition.

Zelaya-coup government to resume dialogue

honduran-president-manuel-zelaya-and-the-coup-government.jpgDialogue between ousted Honduran president Manuel Zelaya and the coup government will resume on Tuesday, after a three-day pause in negotiations.

The resumption of talks will come just two days before the October 15 deadline given by the Zelaya camp for his unconditional restitution.

Negotiators reported progress on over half of the resolution agenda, proposed in San Jose, Costa Rica during talks in August, but deadlock remained over the issue of Zelaya’s return.

“Tuesday will be decisive, and we expect an announcement on Wednesday,” a diplomatic source close to the discussions, who asked not to be named, was quoted by AFP as saying.

A diplomatic delegation from the Organization of American States (OAS) left Honduras on Thursday, without resolving a months-old political impasse between de facto leader Roberto Micheletti and Zelaya, whose overthrow in the June 28 coup has paralyzed the country.
