The family of a former Massachusetts resident is trying to figure out how the 67-year-old man wound up dead in Costa Rica.
Jonathan Scibeck said that the last time he saw his father, John Joseph Scibeck, was on Dec. 27 when he dropped him off at a hotel near Logan Airport.
Less than a week later, Scibeck said he learned from a friend that his father’s body had been found on the side of the road near the western resort town of Playa Potrero. The man had been asphyxiated, but it was not clear how, Scibeck said. Costa Rican officials were investigating his death as a homicide.
“We are just saddened. I don’t know what to say,” John Scibeck said. “To lose him like this is unexplainable.”
None of the man’s belongings, including his wallet, were missing, Scibeck said.
According to neighbors, the elder Scibeck was last seen alone at a local restaurant on New Year’s Eve using his laptop computer. Neighbors did not report noticing anything out of the ordinary.
Local law enforcement officials said there is very little violent crime in the resort community, and that most incidents are drug-related. Law enforcement officials said it seems unlikely that Scibeck was involved in drugs.
“Everyone loved him. It is so unexplainable. He would walk into a room and he’d be friends with everyone. He was just a special guy. We loved him,” the victim’s other son, Joseph Scibeck, said.
Scibeck, a car salesman, lived in Stoughton before he retired and moved to Florida. He had vacationed in Costa Rica before and loved it, his sons said.

The Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad will announce today the process of distributing the Grupo ICE 2010 telephone book to the country. Typically this is done by the Cruz Roja who accept tips for the rescue organization from telephone customers.
The company has competition from private firms that also seek to distribute the telephone numbers.
In both case, the publishers are facing a financial squeeze as society moves away from expensive paper to electronic information. The Instituto de Electricidad maintains a full-service directory line for telephone numbers, and many numbers are available on the Internet.

The hotel Ramada Plaza Herradura is using a research firm to ask experiences and attitudes about medical tourism of thousands of hotel guests. The results will help the hotel create the extra services guests are looking for and deliver the message that Costa Rican medical services are a secret gem.
The survey of current and former guests of the Ramada Plaza Herradura in ocated in Cariari, west of San José, is to evaluate their awareness of medical tourism and to plan for improved hotel services for medical tourists.
The survey is part of a comprehensive marketing plan by the hotel’s management team to promote its services to medical tourists, increasing hotel occupancy and differentiating itself from other hotels in Costa Rica.
The initial on-line guest survey was sent to thousands of former guests who were invited to take the survey in either English or Spanish. With a very high response rate, the survey revealed important information to guide the hotel in the implementation of its marketing strategy including creating special menus for guests receiving dental treatment and to bundle services with local dental and medical providers to offer special package deals.
