Yoga

Yoga is an ancient practice that helps create a sense of union in body, mind, and spirit.   Once, we were all able to pull our toes up by our ears and giggle!  Babies are born yogis.  Then we age, get injured, carry stress in our bodies.  In short, we lose our balance.

Yoga is all about working with the forces of nature.  These forces are not just material energies, but powers of consciousness.

This work with nature occurs at internal levels, as well as external levels.  Internally, we balance the forces of our own nature, as body, mind, breath, and spirit unite.  Externally, we harmonize ourselves with the world of nature and with the Cosmic Spirit behind it.   Each one of us is a manifestation of the entire universe.  Only when we discover the universe within ourselves can we really understand our purpose in life.

In ancient times, this system of physical and mental exercise, which has since spread throughout the world, was born out of a desire for greater personal freedom, health and long life, and heightened self-understanding.  In other words, yoga can benefit you in a physical way, as well as spiritually.

Not only can yoga make you feel great by relieving pain, promoting cardio and circulatory health, and improving energy and respiration, it also helps to maintain a balanced metabolism and create a toned, strong body to improve your athletic performance.  With all of these physical benefits mentioned, you can be sure to look and feel your best.

Yoga also becomes part of your mental life.  Our current civilization is easily the most environmentally unfriendly ever to have arisen on our planet.  On top of this environmental crisis, our current culture has a growing psychological malaise in our internal psychological environment.  This is easy to observe by factors such as the epidemic of depression striking young and old, and the hyperactivity and attention deficit disorders rampant among children.  Most Americans spend more time with the media than with nature, and so there is also little that is natural left in our field of impressions.  Our mind are full of disturbed media images of car wrecks and violence, not with the mountains, sky, water, or plants around us.  We have little pratyahara, or ability to gather our energies and look within, left.  Yoga is a great exercise to perform in nature, and if you intend to promote positive images in your mind, there is no better place to practice than Costa Rica.

Spiritually, yoga builds awareness of your body, feelings, and the world around you.  This unison of body, mind, and soul, can bring you and all-new contentment that you may have not known was possible to achieve before practicing it.  In other words, you learn to live the concept of “oneness.”

There have been some medical studies on the positive effects of yoga, and a growing number of doctors are incorporating yoga into their patient recovery programs.  The successes of yoga can range from the simple “I can touch my toes again” to “it helped me handle my disease.”  Yogis with diseases often feel that the reason they have such successful treatments is because their whole being is ready, calm, and accepting of what would be, and the ability to focus, breathe, and stretch the limits of their body makes them feel confident.

Anyone can do yoga-no matter how young or old you are, whether you’re a couch potato or a professional athlete. Size and fitness level do not matter because there are modifications for every yoga pose. The idea is to explore your limits, not strive for some pretzel-like perfection. “No pain, no gain” is NOT the yoga way. If it hurts, stop. Patience and feeling good about yourself and your world is the way of the yogi.

Diana approaches yoga as an opportunity to find relaxation and balance in a busy life, cultivate flexibility of body and mind, and reconnect to our innate joy.

Her philosophy is to inspire students to better understand themselves and support them in discovering who they really are. In her practical approach to yoga, it is Diana’s belief that one of the keys to enlightenment is to literally “lighten up,” so having fun is always a part of the process. Her sense of humor and commitment to non-judgment provide a safe place for students to explore, break boundaries, and release layers of physical, emotional, and psychic weight. She inspires and supports everyone in finding the path that is right for them.
